Over 60% of women have dealt with fibroids; 1 out of 4 women have a fibroid that requires some form of treatment.
A fibroid is a uterine myoma; a smooth tumor of muscle tissue that is lodged within the uterus.
There are 4 types of fibroids:
Subserosal – grown outside of the uterine wall.
Submucosal- grown in the thin layer of tissue that is found in the uterus.
Pedunculated – grown on stalks and stems; attached to the uterine wall and can grow inside our outside the uterine cavity.
Intramural – grown within the uterine wall. These tend to be the most common.
Common Symptoms will include:
- Unusual or heavy bleeding
- Painful periods
- A feeling of being full or bloated in your pelvic region
- Pain in your lower back
- Pain or pressure during intercourse
- A need to urinate more frequently
- Reproductive problems and/or complications during pregnancy or labor
While all women are prone to fibroids they are most common in African- American women and other women of color. This could be due to extreme estrogen dominance.
There are several types of treatments for fibroids which include scopes of conventional and alternative protocols.
Women with fibroids also tend to experience low iron levels which can lead to anemia. She should consult her physician for lab work to be done.
A naturopathic practitioner can work with women with fibroids to adopt a healthy diet, lifestyle, stress management, environmental awareness and holistic protocols for healing.
Fibroids may be removed via a myomectomy but they can also be shrunk and should be monitored under professional care via a holistic practitioner.
